Starting your resume

The resume builder is an editor with a live preview: what you see is a real page, not an approximation that changes when you export.

Starting#

Three ways in, and bringing in a file is usually the faster one:

The importer also takes two other sources:

• Your LinkedIn profile. Use LinkedIn's Save to PDF on your profile and drop that PDF in. You do not pick it as a separate source - the importer recognises the LinkedIn layout from the file itself.
• A JSON Resume file (resume.json), including one downloaded from this builder. It is read in your browser and not uploaded anywhere.

There is no import from your Revquix profile. The builder reads files, not your profile page.

Rebuilding a file in its own look#

Rebuild from a file brings in your resume as it looks, not only what it says: its fonts, sizes, spacing, margins, columns and colours are carried into a new resume in the builder. A report's Fix it in my resume card does the same for an uploaded file - see fixing your resume from a report.

Before anything is saved, a page shows your file beside the rebuild and sorts what your file's layout does to a parser into three groups:

Group	What it holds
Fixed by the rebuild	Problems the rebuild removes on its own, such as text read across two columns, contact details in the page header, or text you cannot see.
Your call	Choices only you can make, such as a link hidden behind a word, headings a parser may not recognise, or your photo.
Cannot fix from this file	What no rebuild can recover, such as pages that are pictures of text or a password-protected file.

A two-column file stays two columns unless you choose otherwise: Keep my design is the default, and One-column layout switches to a single column with the same fonts and colours. Either way you can change it later in Design. Open in builder saves the resume and takes one of your resume slots; your original file is never changed.

Editing#

Sections can be reordered, hidden, and restyled. The preview updates as you type and is drawn from the same model the export uses, so the page you are looking at is the page you will get.

What the review banner is asking#

An import shows a banner until you have looked at what it was unsure about. It is not a warning that something is broken - it is a list of the places where a decision was made on your behalf.

The parts most often worth a look:

• Dates. 2021-2023 and 2021 - Present parse cleanly; Summer '21 does not.
• Where one job ends and the next begins, when the original had no clear separator.
• Bullets that were really sub-bullets, which arrive flattened.
• Skills, which come in as one list and usually want grouping.
