# Starting your resume

The resume builder is an editor with a live preview: what you see is a real page, not an
approximation that changes when you export.

## Starting

Two ways in, and importing is usually the faster one:

1. **Import an existing resume.** Drop in a PDF or Word file and it is read into structured
   sections - experience, education, skills - rather than pasted in as a block of text. LinkedIn is
   also supported as a source.

2. **Or start empty** and fill the sections directly.

> **Note** - An import is a draft, not a result
>
> Parsing somebody else's layout is guesswork at the edges, so anything the importer was unsure about
> is flagged for you to check rather than quietly accepted. Read the flagged parts before you export -
> that review step is the whole reason the import is trustworthy.

## Editing

Sections can be reordered, hidden, and restyled. The preview updates as you type and is drawn from
the same model the export uses, so the page you are looking at is the page you will get.

## What the review banner is asking

An import shows a banner until you have looked at what it was unsure about. It is not a warning that
something is broken - it is a list of the places where a decision was made on your behalf.

The parts most often worth a look:

- **Dates.** `2021-2023` and `2021 - Present` parse cleanly; `Summer '21` does not.
- **Where one job ends and the next begins**, when the original had no clear separator.
- **Bullets that were really sub-bullets**, which arrive flattened.
- **Skills**, which come in as one list and usually want grouping.

> **Warning** - Read the flagged parts before you export
>
> That review step is the whole reason an import is trustworthy. An unreviewed import is somebody
> else's layout guessed at, and the guesses are at the edges where they are hardest to spot.
