# Making it fit

If your resume is too long - spilling four lines onto a second page - that is the most common thing
people get stuck on. **Auto-fit** is in the design room, and it searches layouts for one that holds
what you have written without cutting anything.

## Two different problems

Auto-fit distinguishes them, and the distinction is the useful part:

1. **"Your writing already fits. The page breaks do not."** There is room on the page - the content
   is landing badly, with a heading orphaned at the bottom or an entry split awkwardly. This is a
   layout problem and auto-fit can solve it outright.
2. **"This resume is longer than it needs to be."** No arrangement of this much text fits. No layout
   change will fix it, and auto-fit says so rather than shrinking the type until it technically
   passes.

> Being told to cut is not the tool failing. A resume that only fits at 8pt with no margins fits
> nothing - a reader still has to read it.

## Working through the candidates

Auto-fit offers layouts one at a time - next, previous, and back to where you were. Nothing is
applied until you accept, so stepping through costs nothing.

It varies spacing, density and how sections are drawn. It does not rewrite your words.

## When you do have to cut

In the order that hurts least:

- **Old roles.** Anything more than 10-15 years back is usually a line, not five bullets.
- **Duties that are obvious from the title.** A backend engineer does not need "wrote backend code".
- **Interests, declarations, references.** "References available on request" is assumed.
- **The weakest bullet in each strong role**, rather than a whole role.

## How long should it be

One page early in a career, up to two with real depth behind it. The rule people quote as law is a
convention; the actual test is whether every line earns its space.
