# Your profile banner

> A short, dated notice across the top of your profile - what it is for, and why it always has an end date.

The profile banner is one short message shown across the top of your public profile. It is for
things that are true _right now_ and will stop being true.

## What it is for

- "Away until the 12th, replies will be slow."
- "Two slots left this month."
- "Currently only taking backend interview prep."

## What it is not for

It is not a place to describe your services - that belongs on the services themselves, where a buyer
is actually deciding. A banner explaining what you offer competes with your listing and goes stale
the moment you change your prices.

> **Note** - Every banner has an end date
>
> You cannot publish one without saying when it stops. A banner with no end is how a profile ends up
> saying "away until the 12th" in March. It disappears on its own when the date passes - there is
> nothing to remember to take down.

## Writing one, and publishing it

A new banner is saved as a **draft**. Publishing is a separate, deliberate step - so you can write
one now and put it up later, and nothing reaches your public profile by accident.

> **Warning** - A banner that breaks the content rules fails to save
>
> It is not accepted and quietly hidden - the save is refused, and the message names the rule that
> fired so you can fix it. That is on purpose: a banner either renders or it does not, and silently
> storing one that never shows would be indistinguishable from a bug.

> Editing a published banner sends it back through the same check, because an edited banner is a
> different banner.

## Limits

- **Three banners** on your account at once. Archive one before creating a fourth.
- **Ninety days** is the longest a banner may run, and an end date is required - there is no
  open-ended option. A banner nobody takes down becomes part of the furniture and stops being read.

## Editing and ending

You can end a banner early at any time. Ending it does not delete the record that it ran, which is
what lets you answer "what did my profile say when they booked?" later.

Only one banner shows at a time. Publishing a new one replaces what is showing.
